VMware Fusion 12 conversion does not seem to be starting

I've got the latest Parallels installed on an Intel Macbook. I've uninstalled the VMware Tools from the source VMware VM. When I try to open the VM in Parallels, nothing happens after I select the vm to open. It is about a 900G image. Is this something that will take time and if so, how can I know it is still working on the open and not quitting without an error message?
 
I've tried to perform the open on a clone of the VM. It did not work any better than the original VM.
I exported the VM to a TAR file (the only option I could see in Fusion) and Parallels does not recognize that file as one it can open.
Is the open of VMware files in Parallel broken or just does not work with my large 1T virtual machine?
