Just an update on this. I managed to get Windows 98 SE to install if I specified that the VM was for XP during initial setup. The problem then however is that the Parallels Tools won't install from the menu option as they require Windows 2000 or later.

L4D2 is a SteamPlay game. Although I've not tried it, you should be able to run it under OSX without the need for Parallels.
