Cannot install Windows 98 SE as guest OS in PDM8

I have to support a very old legacy system that runs on Windows 98 SE. Because of this I have to ensure I have a VM available. I have been able to start an installation OK within PDM8 but once it reboots to start performing hardware detection I get the following error:

Invalid Vxd dynamic link call to device number 2CA3, service 1.
Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows Setup program again to correct this problem.

As the program seems to detect the OS from it's install disc I'm assuming it is something that should work? I managed to install it OK in VMWare Fusion 5 and Virtualbox, but I would prefer it if I didn't have to use/buy another piece of software.
 
Just an update on this. I managed to get Windows 98 SE to install if I specified that the VM was for XP during initial setup. The problem then however is that the Parallels Tools won't install from the menu option as they require Windows 2000 or later.
 
thank you for your feedback. I have reproduced the problem in our lab and will try to fix it in the upcoming PD8 update.
 
as for this exact problem, I was able to pass the installation stage with the following boot flag specified: kernel.paging.invlpg=1
You should go to Virtual Machine->Configure->Boot Order to set it up.

P.S. Actually there is one more problem: Ethernet NIC conflicts with LPT for IRQ. We are unable to solve this at the moment, there are too low interrupts on PIC controller. You will have to remove Printer from VM configuration to force network to work.
 
I hit this problem today after upgrading PD7 to PD8. My existing Win 98 SE failed to boot.

Thanks to Denis for the workaround: I can confirm that it now boots with the boot flag specified, albeit rather slowly.

Looking forward to a formal fix...
 
Hello, I am able to fix it adding the boot option, to enable network I need to delete (with -) the printer 1 device. But I'm not able to get clipboard sharing or any other parallel tools feature working. I have tried with the -other iso for parallels tools but it only includes de windows 98 video driver, everything else seems to apply only to OS/2.

Any clue?
 
Just wanted to add that the workaround posted worked for me as well. I look forward to the update that will officially fix it!
