Windows 11 Microsoft Excel 365 Stuck as background process

I have a user who is currently experiencing problems with Excel x64 which is used heavily for our business.

Issue is that at some point Excel is closed down and later on when the user attempts to run excel nothing happens, no error messages or prompts it just simply will not start or do anything.
Upon troubleshooting excel is still a task excel.exe is running in the background and did not shutdown properly, Ending the task Manually or restarting windows 11 and excel starts to work as normally for a while but eventually the same problem occurs.

Windows event viewer not showing any events around the time.

Excel is running the latest revision and no other users running windows on x64 machines have any problems.

System is a Macbook Pro 16 M3 Max
Problem appears to have surfaced around the update to MacOS 24.4 along side parallels 24.3

Reaching out to see if anyone has experienced the same/similar issues and if they found a fix.

Hello @SOLVI

As silly as this may sound - just try a quick office repair, ive worked in IT for 5+ years and seen this on windows hardware so rules out being a parallels issue

Go to "add or remove programs" in windows - find your office install - click the "..." button then select modify

From here you should get the option to perform a repair

I would normally recommend going for an online repair as it will only take an extra few minutes however will likely fix the issue

if it does not - its more likely something with windows itself, try repairing windows either through the "reset this pc" functions in windows or mount the install ISO to repair from there

Hi,

Thanks for responses, it would appear that since updating 26.3.1 (57396) > 26.3.2 (57398) the issue has now been resolved.

Many small tasks where carried out including office\windows repairs etc before the update and they did not appear to fix it, but all seems good now.
Will come back and report if still facing the issue in the future.

Cheers
