VMWare Fusion VM to Parallels 6: destructive?

I've been running a Windows 7 VM in VMWare Fusion for some time, now. I just picked up a copy of Parallels 6 today, but before I install/configure it and start playing with it, the description of importing my existing VM gave me pause.

Will the import process alter the original VMWare VM, so that I can no longer use the original with VMWare, or will Parallels make its own copy of the VM files? Something else entirely?

for my Windows 7 VMware VM, i believe it simply created the new Parallels VM in it's separate package contents folder.

that said:
•*it would be easy enough to copy/backup your VMWare VM in case Parallels does do something to it you don't like.
•*you do realize that going back and forth would require VMware to be able to re-import your parallels 6 VM. because you're not just going to be able to open the same stuff on disk in both.
 
I've already backed up the VM, I just wanted to know what to expect before I take the plunge. If I like Parallels better than VMWare I don't plan to go back--but if not I want the option to revert with as little hassle as possible.

It seems the question is moot, because Parallels is incapable of importing the VMware VM. Tried three times, and I did remove Tools. Failed. VM works fine in VMWare, Parallels just doesn't work.
