Upgrading to Parallels Desktop 9: how to find your previous version key

If you are Parallels Desktop 7 or 8 user and you are upgrading to Parallels Desktop 9, you will need your previous version license key to activate the product.

I type in my key but either I get a red cross to indicate it is not acceptable, or nothing happens at all. Any suggestions?
