Upgrading or buy full version 16

Hi, I am new to this forum. I only started looking into the forum because i couldn't run my version 14 after updating to Big Sur. So I thought i'd try version 16 and it works, So my question is can I upgrade to version 16 rather than getting a new copy. My other question is what I would need to upgrade. The reason I asked the second question is that I inherited my Mac which already had version 14 installed so I do not have licence number etc. Since I could run version 14, I cannot now get any license information from it either.

I didn't get the serial using terminal. All I get is as below;

The thing is I installed a trial version to see if it works. I am assuming that the expiration dater etc. is linked to the trial version. So have I lost the previous licence then?
