Hi all,

Just started using Parallels. . .have the latest build from the website. . .but (using a bandwith monitor), every time I try to use a web browser or any other net dependent software, I notice a very brief burst of normal broadband speed followed by a quick tapering off to 0 kbps.

Now considering I have a Verizon 3 Mbps connection which works fine on my brand new Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X (and on standalone Windows machines on the same network, this is a real problem.

I've already tried installing and reinstalling Parallels Tools, I've played around with Network Connection settings (it only works on Shared Networking), and I'm ready to give up.

How can I get normal network performance on Parallels?

Any help much appreciated. . .I have 2002 XP Home installed. . .I know it's an old version of XP, but its the only XP I had handy that I had the discs and license for. . .

below is a potential solution to my problem from macwindows.com. . .do I really have to go out and buy another piece of equipment just to get Parallels to work properly?

Here's a tip I discovered myself. From Windows XP in Parallels, I was unable to get to the Internet on the Verizon PPPoE DSL connection set up on the Mac. Well, the XP system was trying to get a DHCP address and of course, could not since we are using PPPoE and not TCP/IP. So I inserted a Netgear DSL firewall/router in between the Mac and the DSL router and configured it for PPPoE and that fixed the problem. It sure feels bizarre needing a router to route in between a single computer!
 
nope, that doesn't work at all. . .I had tried switching from shared to bridged to host-only a long time ago, and nothing. . .

but I'm curious why I'm not able to configure the Parallels NAT net connection on my Mac to connect via PPPoE when that's the way my Built-In Ethernet connection works?

when I configure Parallels NAT that way, it says that "the cable for Parallels NAT is not plugged in" whereas if I set it for DHCP (TCP/IP) connection, it says that it's connected but doesn't work. . .

the other odd thing is that when the DHCP connection is set up, one and only only website works normally. . .Google. . .no other website works. . .and only when it's set to shared. . .no connection of any kind works on bridged or host-only settings. . .

I noticed similar behavior with a wonky Wayport internet connection at a hotel a few days ago with a pc laptop I was borrowing. . .Wayport was having equipment trouble and everyone in the hotel lost connectivity for a day. . .and yet Google mysteriously worked throughout. . .

does Google have a secret net tunnel?
