Trouble upgrading from German version 3 to 4

I thought I had run through the whole installation/upgrading process without problems, but when I press START, I get a screen that tells me that the Virtual machine needs to be upgraded, see

The process ends, somewhat unexpectedly and early with a screen, that has some ill-looking rectangles on it:

and then I'm back to where I started: Upgrade the Virtual machiine, step 1.

I tried to install the Parallels-upgrade a second time - but only to the same effect.

Please help.
 
Those rectangles indicate either a problem with video driver or a problem with video memory

Can you please:

1. Go to Virtual Machine->Configure->Video->adjust video memory to 32 MB.
2. Run Parallels Explorer from Applications->Parallels Explorer
3. Point it to your VM's HDD.
4. Open a boot.ini file on your HDD's C:\ partition root.
5. Find a string that looks like

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
6. Append a "/basevideo /noguiboot" flags to it so that it looks like

7. Close Parallels Explorer and re-attempt the upgrade.

More problems

Okay, I tried it, but I ran into more problems:
* I set the video to 32 MB. (It had been way higher, before)
* Then I open Parallels Explorer, and what surprises me, is that I see 3 virtual machines, instead of 1, as I had expected. See here: http://screencast.com/t/NwiMEhFR
* I'm not sure, what to open, but I go for Virtual harddiscs: There it gets even more confusing. See here:

* I decide for the volume "WinXP", as this sounds most like the volume that I think is my original. This is, what I see:

* I try to open boot.ini, and I get this:

This screen tells me, that the graphic memory is too small.
* I decide to go for "Continue", and I get my favorite screen from quite the beginning again:

Did I take a wrong route, somewhere?

[STim] Instead of double-clicking the boot.ini, please right-click it, select "Open With...", then "Other", select to open with Text Edit and perform the boot.ini steps described by me in my original post
