Simcity 4 crashing

For some people this may seen a bit deja vu (see this post), but now it's not as clear cut:

I have a iMac with Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 3Gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and now Parallels 5. Guest OS is Win XP Home SP3 with 1GB Ram, 256MB graphics and using Boot Camp as the HDD - but Simcity 4 is still crashing. Last time Parallels support stated:

this game requires DirectX 9.0 and current Parallels version supports only 8.0.

Now as Parallels has made a song and dance over "ENHANCED! DirectX 9.0c/9Ex" (quoting directly from box), why is this 7 year old game refusing to run?
