Same Physical Address on Virtual Machine?

Hi, I imagine more people than just I have had this problem, but I was unable to find anything in my searches.

My internet provider only allows one physical address. I do not have a router and I do not want to pay an additional 15 dollars a month to use 2 physical addresses. The provider told me that I could switch to bootcamp because they share the same physical address, but I would prefer not to do that. Without paying extra or switching to bootcamp, is there anyway I can use the internet on both my mac and windows platform?

 

The MAC address that connects to internet if the network mode for the VM is 'shared' is the same, meaning, a VM running on the same machine uses a shared connection provided by the Mac, so your provider only sees one connection/one mac address.

 

hmmm, my internet only works in windows if I have selected ethernet (under bridge settings) Otherwise, my browser wont even tell me i need to "authenticate"

 

I don't see what's your problem? Authenticate on the OS X side, should work if the authentication is tied to ip and/or mac address, in shared mode OS X works like a router for VMs.

 

ok, So I am authenticated on the OS X side. My internet works just fine there, but when I switch to windows, I have no internet access. If I go to parrallels desktop menu > virtual machine > configure > hardware > network 1 , I see a menu that shows a checkbox next to "connected" (I have the checkbox checked) then a drop menu with shared network, and bridge network. Under bridge network is default adapter, ethernet, wifi. . . ,
I have "shared network" selected in the dropbox menu mentioned. My internet on windows still will not work. It looks like it may be technically connected, but no internet access. When I switch to bridge network/ethernet I can connect on te windows side if my internet provider gives that particular physical address access. But this is a different address than my OS X side address and they cannot do that without an additional charge.

So basically I am just wondering what setting I have messed up that wont allow my shared option to actually share the internet access.

I understand your problem, you have my empathy, I'm personally against ISPs that tie their services to MAC addresses as it creates a lot of unnecessary hassle.

Shared network works like this: imagine Windows virtual machine as being connected to a router via a cable (ethernet), this virtual router is a Parallels service (NAPT service). So, DHCP ("Obtain IP address automatically") must be enabled on the Windows side for the Local network adapter, so it gets the an address and the gateway from Parallels 'virtual router'.

Check every step (skip step 2.2) to guarantee all settings are ok. After checking all steps, if it still doesn't work please report back.

(this is probably the best kb article in Parallels kb, it even helped me solve a very very exotic issue with Bonjour that was adding a 0.0.0.0 gateway via DHCP!)

I am stuck on step four:
Windows network adapter properties:
Inside your virtual machine open your network adapter properties in your Windows virtual machine.
Verify that it is set up to "Obtain IP address automatically".
NOTE: Make sure you are checking the right network adapter.

I cannot find this option?

I have followed these steps to try:

Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.

I do not see 'manage network connections' here

 

The place to find these settings changes between versions of Windows, google is your friend here. I googled myself for "change tcp/ip windows <version here>":

That is actually what I was following, I do not see anywhere "Manage network Connections"

 

I edited the post, check again, I have no idea what's your Windows version, so I put the 3 most used there.

unfortunately, no success after going through all steps. Calling my ISP again... thank you for all your help.
