Problems with internet connectivity

I have a copy of parallels 3.0 running on my mac so I can view websites I build in windows xp browsers. Anyway, I've used (occasionally) it for sometime now without any problems until the other day when I went to check a recent site. Parallels isn't getting a network connection anymore. I'm running the most recent versions of Leopard and Parallels. I know I did use Parallels at some point after upgrading to Leopard I just don't recall if it was before or after the 10.5.1 update. So I checked the Parallels site for some insight and didn't get very far. This is the post I found: http://kb.parallels.com/entry/39/394/

I went through step 1 and checked the settings to make sure the network adapter was enabled and the Connect cable at startup was checked with Shared Networking selected. I think Shared networking is fine for me so I skipped the other two steps. I've never had to mess with these setting before so I'm not sure what is going on.

If anyone has any advise or pointers I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm having a similar problem, however, I'm running windows vista instead of xp. I noticed if I uninstall parallels and delete the library/preferences files for parallels, then reinstall, it fixes the shared networking but the bridged one is still broken for me
 
Hello Ayeying and Po3,

Please disable Firewall both on Mac and Windows sides, then disable Antivirus protection. Check the network connection.

This is not a workaround - just a try to find out the reason for your problems with internet connectivity.

Do you have Keyspan programs installed on Mac?
Do you have VPN?

Xenos, see my comments after your suggestions

Please disable Firewall both on Mac and Windows sides, then disable Antivirus protection. Check the network connection. - Did this, and it didn't make a difference. Set my mac firewall prefs to 'allow all incoming connections' then opened up parallels and set the windows firewall to 'off'. Antivirus was off also.

Do you have Keyspan programs installed on Mac? Do you mean Quicksilver? I have Quicksilver installed.
Do you have VPN? Nope.
 
Hello Po3,

Please check whether you can see Local Area Connections if you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

Could you also let me see two screenshots:

a) On Windows side open Start menu, choose Run, type CMD, press Enter; in the CMD window run ipconfig /all command;
b) On Mac side open Terminal and run ifconfig command.

Po3, thank you for the screenshots. We can see that IP address is delivered correctly to your Virtual Machine. Let's check Parallels NAT port status in Mac System Preferences -> Network.

Choose Parallels NAT from the Show menu. In Configure IP field set Off and press Apply button. Then set Using DHCP in Configure IP field and press Apply button again.

Choose Parallels Host-Guest from the Show menu. In Configure IP field set Off and press Apply button. Then set Using DHCP in Configure IP field and press Apply button again.

Check the network connection. If it's still not there:

From Windows side in the CMD window run ping www.parallels.com, then ping IP (copy the IP from Mac System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet -> Router).

Please let me see the output.

BTW could you give me a link on your Quicksilver - could not find, what's this.

Po3, please run this command in Mac Terminal:

sudo killall –hup pvsnatd

ok I did. It asked for my password, which I entered, and then it looked like nothing happened...

I opened up parallels and checked the connection, still nothing... Tried pinging www.apple.com and the router with no luck.

Please reinstall Parallels Desktop.
If this does not help, we will need more information from you for Parallels engineers could start a serious investigation.

Well I got around to reinstalling parallels this morning. I started by uninstalling the old version and then installing a clean copy. After that I restarted my machine and tried to open parallels and then access a website. Still no luck! ughh!

I did get a message after the installation saying something about ethernet 2 & 3 in the network prefs because they are not setup. I hit "cancel" as I don't have anything plugged into those ports. Though, I just have two ethernet ports on the back of my macpro.

You know the strange thing is I have a a copy of parallels on my Macbook Pro also (same network, but access is via airport instead of ethernet) and Parallels works fine... I have checked the system prefs to see if anything stands out as different and from what I see they are pretty much setup the same. The one difference was that on my mac pro I have websharing on and on the macbook pro I don't however I did try to turn that off and it didn't make a difference.

The other thing that stood out was that in the network prefs on the macbook pro the status says for the Parallels guest and NAT says "Parallels Host-Guest currently active abd has the IP address 10.37.---.- "(not sure if I is okay to enter the whole IP address, but it is there) while on my macPro the status says "Parallels Host-Guest has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect."

Same thing here. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Parallels 5584 with Windows XP on my MacBook Pro. Strangely, the same setup (but with Vista) works at home on my Mac Pro.

I've turned off the firewall in XP, uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels, and reinstalled Parallels tools inside the VM with no change.

Parallels NAT and guest are green in my Mac OS X network prefpane, both showing 10.37.x.x and 10.211.x.x IP addresses, with 255.255.255.0 subnets. IPconfig in Windows comes back with a 10.211.x.x IP, which matches up to (en3) in the network prefpane.

ifconfig on the Mac gives me this for the appropriate ports:

Hello,

Po3, network adapters can not access Parallels driver to get IP. This can be caused by some software. Network software – most probable.

What network connection do you use in Mac? What is Ethernet-2 that can be seen in your Mac Sys Preferences?

If you compare your Macbook Pro and Mac soft configurations you might find the cause of the issue.

You can find the information on Parallels phone support here.

Jimmy Mac, do you have Shared Networking set in your VM? Could you let us see the output of ping www.parallels.com command and ping IP (copy the IP from Mac System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet -> Router)?

I use the ethernet 1 connection. Ethernet 2 is not connected. I can be seen in the network prefs pane.

Can you give me some examples of "network softwares" that might causing this issue?
 
Thanks for the response. en2 and en3 are the parallels NAT and guest network ports as they appear in Mac OS X. I connect via en1, which has a good (non-NAT) IP.

The VM is set for shared networking via the default adapter and is getting a good (10.211.x.x NAT) IP address.

I see no router in either the Parallels NAT or Parallels Guest connections (en2 and en3), but I have a router in en1. I pinged that in the VM and get "Ping request could not find host IP. Please check the name and try again". I also tried pinging the IP of my main machine in OS X and got the same result.

So, the VM is set to shared networking and appears to be getting an IP address from the Parallels NAT port. That is a 10.37.x.x NAT address (don't know if that matters), but pinging to the IP of the host machine or the IP of the router of the host machine (a non-NAT IP address) is unsuccessful.

Security prefpane in Mac OS X is set to "Allow all incoming connections" and Windows firewall is disabled.
 
Jimmy Mac, the specialist on network connections who I'm asking on your issue now would like to see the screenshots of outputs of ipconfig /all and tracert www.parallels.com commands. Could you please attach them to your next post?

Sure thing - attached. The tracert fails immediately, which makes this whole thing seem like DNS (or something else) is failing at a pretty high level.

I'm having identical problems on my imac. Began last night after installing latest updates from Apple for Leopard. However, I have two imacs with similar setups. One works fine and the other won't connect to the network as per other postings. Does the deletion of preferences help?
 
Tried to lose all Parallels' preferences, did an uninstall and a new clean install. Even had to re-register the serial number. All to no avail. Network problem identical to others. Would appreciate help.
