Parallels doesn't load after upgrade to Leopard

I have been using Parallels version 1 (build 3214) on one of the early Intel IMac's for a number of months with few problems. My main reason for using parallels is to be able to run the Windows version of Quicken on my IMac. I have been backing up Quicken to a flash drive. A few days ago I upgraded the OS from Tiger to Leopard using the "archive and install" method. I added an external hard drive and backed up the IMac hard drive with Time Machine.

Now Parallels does not load. I get the error message "Parallels Desktop is unable to operate properly since it cannot communicate with one of the drivers. Try to restart the application to overcome this issue. If restart doesn't help, reinstall Parallels desktop. Note---". Since I have many years of important financial data stored with the Quicken program, I am very nervous about the possibility of losing/corrupting this data while trying to revive Parallels.

I would appreciate suggestions on a step by step method to get Parallels running again.

Hello,

In regards to the issue please uninstall and reinstall Parallels Desktop using the .dmg file or Parallels cd which you used to install Parallels Desktop. Uninstalling and reinstalling of Parallels Desktop will not affect your virtual machine in any respect. It will remain as it is.

Thanks for the quick response. I noticed the articles you mentioned relate to Parallels versions 3&4. I am still using version 1. Will these steps work with version 1? Also, where are the Quicken program and files for Windows residing now. I have looked in the IMac HD and find only files relating to the pre-installed Mac based Quicken 6.

The screen monitor on this IMac has developed vertical streaks so I will be taking this computer in to the local Apple store tonight to have the monitor replaced. It may be a few days before I can continue this discussion.

Finanlly got the computer screen fixed and was able to reload everything and parallels 4 seems to be working OK. Thanks again for the help.

Similar issue

I upgraded to Snow Leopard this weekend. Had to do an erase and install from Time Machine thanks to the guys that upgraded my hard drive last fall and used the wrong format! Now, when I go to start Parallels, it tells me that it cannot find the folder it needs to run the Virtual Machine, even though it's sitting right next to it in Applications. I uninstalled & re-installed, repaired permissions, uninstalled and re-installed again, repaired permissions again, and still no dice -- I get the same vague message!

My job -- and my income -- are riding on this! I opened a support ticket this morning, and have heard nothing. Right now, the only thing that's keeping me from moving to VMWare Fusion is the fact that I paid for Parallels, and I'm used to it. One for sure, though: I learn fast enough to make the switch if needs be...
 
I have run in to a similar issue. After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I had to upgrade to a GUID partition.

I tried restoring from time machine, but parallels did not work.

I re-installed parallels, but now I cannot find the virtual machine. Where is the virtual machine stored?

Help? Please?

Go to this page to see what exactly I was dealing with.

I was in Parallels 4, although an earlier build, and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard I had to do the "Erase & Install" procedure because the people that upgraded my hard drive used the incorrect format. When I installed the new OS, I used the same username that I had set up previously and then used Migration Assistant to bring over my data and programs from Time Machine -- and it told me that I couldn't have two users with the same name, so it renamed my user folder with a " 1" (space 1) after the name.

Parallels doesn't like that very much.

I had to re-Erase & Install Snow Leopard all over again, this time using a different name than when I first installed Snow Leopard. Then I brought my user data over from Time Machine, and Parallels still wouldn't go. So then I followed the procedure from the link above that VBR pointed me to in that thread -- to the letter! (Basically, what it does is remove Parallels from your drive -- completely -- *without* removing the .pvm files.)

If you're queasy about using Terminal, then find someone who isn't. BUT: it really isn't hard, you just have to make sure you type each line exactly as it is listed there, one line at a time, and hit Enter after each line, waiting for the prompt to show before typing the next line.

Worked like a charm. ;-)
