Here is what I get when I try to install the 64bit Win 7 Pro.

"Windows cannot install required files. The files may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for the installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0x80070017
 
Weird.. sorry to hear that!

I just tried creating a new Win7 64 (Home Premium, upgrade dvd) which worked. VM settings: 3GB, 1 cpu, 128GB SATA. I got that error with 990, but 992 fixed it.

Do you have a USB key or USB drive on the system? I've had Windows bomb on installs (PC side, not under a VM) if I'd forgotten to remove the key.

Yes, I have a passport serving Time Machine. I'll remove it and give that a try. How does that interfere with this process? (No need to explain, it's probably over my head, so to speak).

This is a very common Windows problem. Did you tried using a different DVD drive, or maybe copying the installation files to a USB stick (4gb or bigger) and performing a USB install? Also, disable any security software before attempting to upgrade or do a clean install.
