I also am reverting back to 3.0 and asking for my upgrade $$ back.
The upgrade process is very slow, and cumbersome, and once completed, my VISTA VM actually runs about 50% SLOWER not faster than before.
I also can't shut down the Parallels program after closing the VM, and I have to use "Force Quit" to close the application.
I have to say this is the buggiest version release from them I have seen so far.
Back to 3.0 and/or a switch to VMWare I think.

The place i bought the upgrade download from offers a refund as long as you can show proof you removed the software from the machine. I took a photo of the crashed system as proof and sent it in already. I am not sure how much this release was tested on the new macbookpro laptops but something is not right in there installer.
Phone Support Terribly Lacking
Wow I can see why Obama wants to bring the jobs back to the U.S. I have wasted one and a half hours on the phone to "Technical Support". I have spoken to FIVE different people - each time they are very hard to understand, do not have any idea about version 4.0 and say they will transfer you to a "product specialist" and then the call drops. Despite taking down a "Call back number" they do not call back. Each time I call back I have to explain the situation over again to someone who really doesn't have the communication skills needed to really understand technical problems. PLEASE bring support back to a USA call center.

Fantastic after 60 mins on hold the phone systems gives me the message "I'm sorry for your inconvenience - all our engineers are on other calls - please call back some other time - goodbye!!" - Are you kidding me?? Parallels - you need to pull this release and make a statement and not put it back for download until it is working.

My XP VM was really slow after an upgrade. It was also eating loads of my CPU (in activity monitor, not task manager), so I htought I'd try out a new VM with Vista x64 and so far so good. It is definately running nicely, although it doesn't support Aero yet.
From what I have seen so far, if you want to use 4, start with a new VM in version 4 instead of upgrading old version 3 VMs.
The other thing installing 4 did was wipe out all of my VPN configurations.

Same symptoms as Neil_c - different reason
I had the same symptoms as Neil_c, i.e. the same error message. However, the cause seems to be the circular reference in the symbolic link /usr/local/lib. This issue is described in another thread:

However, the fix there did not work for me.
@Parallels: I have noticed you included Neil_c's resolution in the online troubleshooter. Perhaps you should include the other possible cause (symbolic link) in the resolution as well. It might also be a good idea to direct the users to the error logs - not everyone knows about them.

I emailed you about this specific issue and you replied by sending me a link to download the same 480Mb ISO file that failed in the first place. I dutifully downloaded it anyhow, and sure enough, it failed - again.
Why are you being so mum about this issue? Apparently, there are quite a few of us who cannot install PDT v4.

EULA's cannot take legal rights away from you. If your state or local laws say that it is illegal to forbid restitution in a EULA, then you have the right to get your money back.

The installation appears to complete, however when running the Parallels Desktop app there is a brief flash on the screen and then nothing happens. If I try to run "Parallels Explorer" then "Unable to find Parallels SDK library." message-box pops up.
Additional note, the "Parallels Network adapter"(s) are available in the "System Preferences -> Network" pane, so at least some portion of the installation seems to have succeeded.

Same issue with 'run preflight script'
It is silly that I can't find v3.0 to download.
I've got to my VM running to complete work.
May have to convert the image to VMWare Fusion in order to proceed working.

It is silly that I can't find v3.0 to download.
I've got to my VM running to complete work.
May have to convert the image to VMWare Fusion in order to proceed working.

I have the same issue
I have a MacBook 2.4GHz with 4GB Ram running 10.5.5 and have the same problem. When I try to get error nothing happens. I have to force quit the parallels installation. Then the computer restarts and Parallels hasn't installed. I have only downloaded the trial version, I am glad I did not purchase Parallels.

I've just purchased the Parallels 4.0 upgrade and when try to install, I always end up with the following:
I have a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz with 4GB RAM, running 10.5.5. Parallels Desktop 3.0 was installed but was removed as part of the installation process for Parallels Desktop 4.0. I have tried manually removing any persistent Parallels 3.0 components and rebooted several times. Manually rebooting after receiving the error shown in the image does not solve the issue and Parallels 4.0 cannot be found in /Applications/
Same here. Awful product and support. I already called Parallels several times this week and they said there's no way to get a refund for Parallels 4.0. (I already owned PD 3 and paid to get PD 4...can't say how slow slow it is and how many times my PB crashed). I called support for the last time yesterday- I was put on hold 3-4 times, before getting redirected in Russia or India...then the call dropped.
I have just switched to VMware Fusion. It's really another world! Stable, fast, and what make me feel. Take a look at this product my friends- it's worth the extra money you have to pay...but you will have a really highend product backed by the virtualization leader (after all Vmware created and still dominates the virtualization market...enough for me to be confident in their products)
If you don't want to pay again for another product, take a look at Virtualbox, it's a free download..
