parallels 2.2222 on ubuntu 7.1 host

I'm trying to setup ubuntu 7.1 as the host with parallels 2222. I successfully installed parallels, with all the drivers etc. installed -- it says "now you can run parallels workstation 2.2, issue parallels command"

when I do issue the parallels command it goes away for about 5 seconds and then just drops to the command line again.

some more details -- the computer is a new build, abit mb with core 2 duo 3 ghz, three hard drives -- root drive is 36 gb with a clean ubuntu install about 20 minutes before the parallels install, other two drives are ntfs, I have xp running as an alternate boot by changing boot disk priority in the bios.

I installed parallels using tar -- the deb install did not work properly.

consider me a novice at linux -- have an old caldera version but have not touched for 5 years. I am not a novice at parallels -- have parallels for mac running on a macbook with xp installed as guest. great product by the way ... but now I want to get xp running under linux on this desktop.

parallels-config showed a broken link in usr/bin and running anything came up with some file not found errors -- I did not take any notes. I had other problems with the installation because linux was booting with ahci and my xp install did not support -- I ended up using the xp disk in recovery console and fixmbr on that disk drive and re-installing ubuntu on the 36gb drive with the windows drives disconnected so that the ubuntu install didn't put grub on the windows primary volume. the plan was always to go to the bios and change disk boot priority, change ahci to ide or back as the case may be to reboot.
 
here is the tail end of what I have in var/log/messages at this point from the last time that I rebooted -- it seems like everything is working ok (I'm using a trial license that's why I'm getting the "unspecified"??? and tainted kernel ?? -- but running parallels does not bring up the screens to setup the virtual machine.

For anyone hopefully looking at this -- I tried the script that was provided by another user for the prereqs to no avail.

How can I tell if someone from the parallels support group is looking at this ? it's been almost 2 days now without any suggestions / help ...

I still cannot get anywhere with this -- how do I get support ? I also tried VMWare Server and it works, but has its own issues. I am happy with Parallels on the MAC but also want to get Parallels on Linux working.

Only recommendation I have. Instead of the src, grab the deb file. Install that like normal deb files. Then run sudo parallels-config then Reboot. This runs smoothly on ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy)
 
Well, I did get somewhere -- prior to your post I had installed the deb version, which I had a problem with before. There were dependencies that I had to sort through to get things working.
