I did a lot of digging and found a reference to a problem issue with the new Applle MacBooiks,, including my M3. These new machines do not supply enough power to their USB ports to allow devices like my LG slim DVD drive to function.
I just bought a powered USB Port Hub and the good news is that I am now able to read DVD and CD disks through my LG DVD drive.
