I had been testing Mint 19 using VMWare. After moving over to Parallels, I was having long logins, crashes, and core files showing up in my home directory. After poking around I noticed that the rcx.d (x = 0 to 5 +S) directories still had startup items for VMware tools. After manually deleting all traces of them as well as the binaries they referenced, I have no more problems.
So I guess the lesson is either
1. don't try VMware

2. make sure you remove all traces of the tools in your mint guest.
