Is there any way to recover files from a corrupt VM?

I have a 64 bit Kubuntu 10.04 vm on my MacBook Pro that will not boot. There's some kind of problem that either my Parallels or Kubuntu installation no longer recognizes my CPU as 64bit. Is there any way that files I created on that VM can be recovered without having to get that VM booted up? (I know it's very unlikely, but I have to ask, since there seems to be no way to recover the VM itself.)

Just to let everyone know, there actually is a way to recover files from a vm that is unbootable, it's easy and works great. I was able to recover all the files I thought had been lost forever.
