How long do updates last on Parallels Desktop?

I am about to purchase Parallels, but have one question. Unless I am missing something, Parallels Desktop for Mac only seems to have a build number. How do the updates work? Is there a version...for example Parallels 1 and 2, etc.?

Current release version is 2.5 (build 3186). Previous was 2.2 (build 1970). Hope that helps.
