HELP!!!! Will uninstalling cause me to loose my Windows data?

I am having a HUGE problem. :(

I did the recent upgrade and am dead in the water. Nothing works. This is terrible for me because all my business info is on the Windows side of the computer. :eek: :eek:

I am not a technical person. I am wondering if I can unistall Parallels and either just use the old version or try the upgrade again.

My question is, if I do an uninstall, will I loose all my Windows data and information?

If not, does anybody know of someone in L.A. or someone who can provide phone support to solve this? I paid for parallels but can't reach anybody (I just get voicemail) and nobody calls me back (and no indication as to when they will).

hmm... did you uninstall parallels tools before you update? If not, try to uninstall current build, install 1970 build again. If it will not help you, try to boot windows into "Safe mode" (when windows is booting press F8), after that uninstall parallels tools. If you uninstalling parallels you are not losing your data(your windows data is stored into *.hdd file or in bootcamp partition). But for some reason save your current VM configuration (at least *.hdd file) before you will do any changes.
 
I didn't uninstall because I did not know we had to.

1. how do i uninstall current build? do i just use the uninstall icon that came with the upgrade

2. how do i install the 1970 build? (what is the 1970 build?) I have my original disk but it does not say what version it is

3. if i boot in safe mode, how do i uninstall parallels tools?

hmm... Instead of build 1970 you must install your previous vesrion.
The simplest way is to boot windows into safe mode, after that click start->settings->control panel->add/remove programs-> parallels tools->uninstal or remove (i don't remember). After that you must restart VM
 
Ok, I removed parallels tools and now i can get into windows. THANKS!

What should I do next for long term stability?

Should I install Parallels tools or should I uninstall Parallels and re-install it?
 
Have you booted windows successfully after uninstalling tools? Now you can install tools from your current version of parallels. And into the future,please, read instructions to new software carefully, as I remember there is a reference to uninstall old tools before you update parallels.
PS: And if you will not install tools, you encounter with some discomfort into parallels behaviour, but also you will not encounter such troubles into the future.

To make sure I do this the right way, how do I install tools from the current version of Parallels? Do I just go to Actions and select Install Parallel Tools and then do a complete install?
 
Yes. You are right. Go to Actions and select Install Parallel Tools.
If installation will not start, connect manually to vmtools.iso that comes with current version of parallels, to virtual cdrom drive. Installation will start automatically. If it will not start automatically :) open CDROM into windows and run pt.exe or setup.exe(i don't remember) from vmtools.iso manually.
 
Uninstalling Tools w/o being able to boot into WinXP?

I'm hung up on a black screen and can't boot into WinXP so is there another way to uninstall Tools? Can't even boot into Safe Mode.
 
Hmm... Have you tried 'rolling back' to your previous version by backing up your folder that holds (it is called 'Parallels' under a standard install the .hdd and .pvs files to a external and then un-installing Parallels completely... Then spotlight for anything Parallels (make sure you have your external disconnected so it is not included in the search) and delete it. Now, re-install the build that you had working and then drop your folder back on.

That should get you back in. Un-install Parallels tools. Then try your upgrade.
 
I uninstalled Parallel Tools and when I tried to reinstall it, Parallels began booting and re-booting with no way to stop it. Now, every time I turn on Parallels, it immediately boots and re-boots. I have to turn off my Apple machine to stop it. When I try to reach customer service, it says it doesn't recognize my serial number even though I bought it at Comp USA. And, out of desperation, I bought telephone support but I couldn't talk with a real person - only a recording that said they would call back, which they haven't. Any suggestions?

Hmm... Well, firstly, we need the usual to help out with any specifics... What is your set-up? i.e. Parallels Build #, Hardware config, OS version (real and virtualized), etc.

Secondly, a specific question: at what point does the machine re-boot again? What is your screen?

Thirdly, a few suggestions:
1. Try booting into safe mode (Hold down F8 or fn+F8 on boot).
2. If you use BootCamp, try going in through BootCamp (whether or not you use this is important for us to know).
3. Have you tried adding that drive as a second drive to a new install and pulling your data off of that?
4. Not to be rude, but here is the reason you back up. I learned the hard way a few times... I've lost probably a minimum 40 hours of coding at one point in time, another time I lost hours and hours of bookmarks when wiping my system.

Hope you got some ideas.
