Help needed tracking down symptoms

Alright, deleted. Even restarted the mac.
Attempting to open any windows file -- even a notepad file -- gives me "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -10660)"
I'm assuming that I need to rebuild launchservice's ideas of the applications, but I have no idea how to do that.
Inspecting the file (boot.ini, if you're curious) tells me that the default is notepad.app (2.5), that there is a notepad.app (3.2), as well as Notepad [1].app (2.5) and Notepad [1].app (3.2)

sorry for the delay.
Please open the folder where the information on your Historic VM is stored. There you should find .pvs and .hdd files. Please copy these files to another folder.
Then start Parallels Desktop, select Historic VM and click 'File' -> 'Delete'. This action will delete all information on your Historic VM, except the .pvs and .hdd files that you have copied to another folder. You can use these files to recreate a VM.

I could not figure out how to use the .hdd and .pvs files to create a new VM. Attempting to do so eventually brought me to a point of being told "Please insert your windows CD to begin the installation", even after I had selected the existing .hdd file.
I also saved the Snapshots directory and Snapshots.xml file, but was never asked about those. I'm assuming that those are needed to find out what's what in the .hdd folder.

Symptoms that I still can't figure out. At this point, I don't know if they are parallels issues, or windows issues, but they don't happen on real hardware.
1. IE has option buttons / menu options for "Manage add-ons ...", but I never can get to the manage add-ons page.
2. Browsing some sites will give me a cryptic error message: "An attempt was made to reference a token that is no longer valid" (I hope I have that correct from memory). Trying to track that error message down with google search, microsoft KB, etc, constantly points back to it coming from a .net application problem or IIS. As far as I know, we have no .net programs of any kind being run, and even if the web site we're using is running from IIS, we shouldn't see that on our end, right?
I installed the .net 2.0 service pack update, and that error message still appears. Sadly, not on demand.
Clicking on the "OK" button will give me from 50 to 55 blank IE windows.
3. The IE icon in the start menu has a generic file icon, not the IE icon.
4. The IE icon on the desktop is missing the first group of actions, above the first separator line, including the "Browse the web" action normally associated with double-clicking it.
Is there a way to force a full re-install -- with completely wiped settings, no third party anything, etc -- of internet explorer on XP?

Apparently, trying to have IE 7 on a machine, and then going back to IE 6 can leave one little reg key left being in some cases.
OK, my client just informed me that about a year ago, when this VM was still on real hardware, he did have a beta of IE 7 on, used it for a little, and then removed it. So maybe a better question: Why has this NOT caused any problems until now? In any event, it seems to be more a windows issue than a parallels issue.
Le Sigh. As I asked, is there any way to force a from-scratch clean re-install of IE 6?
