1920 - still crashing and burning

Went back to 1918, recreated the VMs, attached old hdd files, installed 1920, rebooted. Same thing - Parallels bounces in the doc for 1 minute, then the dock icon stops, the triangle goes away, Paralles sits in Activity Monitor for another minute then crashes. I'm back to 1918, which is working as it did before.

Did you tried to reboot Mac OS X?

Try to remove all devices from your VM configuration using 1918, save it, upgrade to 1920 and add these devices again or create new VM configuration.

Yep, rebooted and still no luck. Going back to the older version or turning off host only fixes the problem.

Can't launch

I have uninstaled and reinstalled and it will not launch. Bounces once or twice then nothing.

1920 doesn't work for me either. Not after a restart, not after building a new VM from scratch and attaching it to my hard disk. Even uninstalling and reinstalling didn't fix it. It actually worked for one cycle of the VM, the very first time I installed it over 1896... but now it quits with a system error as soon as I try to power on. I sure hope 1918 gets me going again! EDIT: it did.

Here's a new one. On my Mac Pro 3GB, I can't even install 1920. When I tell the installer to go ahead, it errors out with "There were errors installing the software. Please try installing again." Weird when the installer doesn't work.

I upgraded from 1918 to 1920 with no problems (I rebooted after install for good measure). I did have some error messages come up when starting VM of XP which I clicked OK to (which basically forced the VM to start from a fresh boot). Installed tools and all appears to be working fine.

Same here, Can't seem to run new version.

Sorry guys, I did all what you asked us to do with no avail. It does not work. I removed the devices, upgrading, rebooting both Mac OSX, and VM, and can't get it to go. I must have rebooted after every small I did, and no devices are attached still no go. This one is broken. Will revert back to earier version until it is fixed.

Possible solution

I've been running all versions of the Mac Pro "compatible" builds with few issues up until build 1920 which failed to launch like many others. Reboots, uninstalls then reinstalls etc etc failed to stop the crashing. I've followed all suggestions without luck.

So, I decided to remove everything and see if it fared any better. I ended up uninstalling Parallels (using the unistaller from the version that was currently installed), manually removing…

/Library/Parallels
~/.parallels_settings
~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.*

… in Terminal, deleted the .pvs file I was using, deleted any used shared folders, rebooted, repaired disk permissions before attempting another installation.

Well… it now works.

I do however still have the VT-x problem which sort of stinks. Oh well… can't have everything I guess.

EDIT : To delete these files in Terminal, obviously open Terminal and copy and paste the following line…

sudo rm -R /Library/Parallels ; rm ~/.parallels_settings ; rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.*

… then hit return. You should be asked to enter your password so do so.

Try to remove all devices from your VM configuration using 1918, save it, upgrade to 1920 and add these devices again or create new VM configuration.

It's a no go. Reverting back to 1918 results in a stable WinXP VM opening and functioning great, every timie. Moving back to 1920 always results in Parallels being unable to open the application, which quits before it can open any window. It seems obvious to me that build 1920 will not work on my Mac Pro. The application has to start up successfully (which it won't) in order for the modifications you requested me to perform on the VM to have any effect. I don't think the VM is the problem. It is more likely the Parallels application and it's supporting files and preferences.

I am going back to 1918 until you come up with a new build that fixes this 1920 problem.

Well, I got the installer to finally run. I think a piece of Parallels was still running in the background after I tried to shut down my Vista VM. Anyway a reboot fixed the installer issue. After installing, it wouldn't let me run Parallels until after I rebooted again. I can now run my VM's.

Only trouble is I still can't run two VM's at the same time. I get the out of virtual memory error. Looking in my Activity Monitor, I see Parallels is running with almost 120% of the CPU, which I guess translates as using up an entire Xeon core plus about 20% of another one. It spins up 18 threads and uses over 2.3GB of virtual memory. I guess running two VM's requires more than 2GB of virtual memory.

1. Started 1910 (my last version)
2. Disabled all devices
3. Saved
4. Uninstalled 1910
5. Rebooted OSx
6. Installed 1920
7. Rebooted
8. Started 1920
9. Re-enabled all devices
10. Saved
11. Oops, forgot to Sleep, so shut down 1920 and Sleep
12. Started 1920
13 Started VM
14. All JOY!
15. OK Apple, please fix the VT-x problem so we don't have to Sleep...

Won't start

I've been lurking, waiting for a version that will work on MacPro-3.0 Ghz 5GB RAM. (Using on MacBook Pro successfully for months.) Never installed any version prior to 1920 on MP-3.0. No joy. Either kernel panics or "Can't communicate with hypervisor" upon starting PDesktop. Back to lurking mode.

ditto here, except I can boot harddrive based images, my "unexpectedly quit" messages only happen when there's a CD in the drive, and it happens before Parallels unmounts the disc. Perhaps this is a symptom?
