Advantages of deploy from template vs. cloning?

The Parallels Desktop 9 User's Guide describes how to create new VMs by cloning an original or by deploying from a template (also tells how to convert VM to template and vice versa). Other than pointing out that a template is not directly runnable, it doesn't really describe the differences, i.e., why you would choose one method over the other. I would assume that templates have some advantage(s) over simply cloning, but am unable to find any discussion of that in the documentation, the knowledge base, or forums.

Ideas?
