Activation of Desktop 17 (upgrade) is rejecting my earlier license

I bought the upgrade and entered my new (upgrade) and previous keys into the Activation window. It reports "The previous activation key has not been accepted by the license server.". I know I have the previous version in my Parallels account. It is v5, but I don't see any indication that this shouldn't be accepted for an upgrade.
