Portuguese (Brazil, Apple) – Parallels keyboard layout does not handle dead keys correctly
Hello Parallels Support Team,
I would like to report a keyboard layout issue affecting the
Portuguese (Brazil, Apple) – Parallels layout in a Windows virtual machine.
I am running Windows 11 ARM through Parallels Desktop on an Apple Silicon Mac.
My physical keyboard is an ANSI third-party keyboard, connected to the Mac. The macOS keyboard layout works correctly.
However, when I select the official
Portuguese (Brazil, Apple) – Parallels layout in Windows, most keys work as expected, but accented characters do not.
The main issue is that dead keys are being interpreted as regular characters instead of waiting for the next keystroke to compose the accented character.
For example:
- Pressing tilde followed by <span>a</span> produces <span>~a</span> instead of <span>ã</span>.
- Pressing the acute accent followed by <span>c</span> produces <span>'c</span> instead of <span>ç</span>.
This is not simply a matter of incorrect key positioning. The problem is specifically related to the handling of dead keys and character composition.
I found an earlier report on your official forum, dated September 12, 2024, describing exactly the same issue:
https://forum.parallels.com/threads/acentos-e-cedilha-nao-funcionam.365164/
This suggests that the issue may affect other Brazilian users as well.
I also noticed that the official troubleshooting documentation recommends using Parallels Tools and the Apple-Parallels keyboard layouts, but I could not find a specific fix for this dead-key behavior.
As a workaround, I had to create and register a custom Windows keyboard layout to get the expected behavior.
My questions are:
- Is this a known issue with the Portuguese (Brazil, Apple) – Parallels keyboard layout?
- Is there an official fix or an updated keyboard layout available?
- Does Parallels plan to correct the dead-key handling in a future release?
- Is this issue also present in Windows 11 ARM virtual machines?
I believe this is an important usability issue for Brazilian users running Windows on Macs. Correct accent composition is a basic requirement for typing in Portuguese, and users should not need to create custom keyboard layouts to achieve it.
Thank you for your attention. I hope this can be investigated and corrected.
Best regards.
