If I double-click a SQL file from my MacOS desktop it always launches a new instance of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) regardless of whether or not it is already running. If I open the file from the Windows VM it reuses the existing instance, so the issue is only when launching from MacOS. I have changed the default application in MacOS and then changed it back to SSMS to make sure the file association was set correctly, but there was no change. It had been working fine for years so it was only recently that this behavior began. Any ideas?
SOLUTION (workaround lol): for your specific files in MacOS set as default app Parallels File explorer app. Open with -> Application (Parallels) -> Windows 11 Applications -> File Explorer.app i reported a bug, if you can call it a bug since it was deffo not in Parallels 18 and 19. tbh i reported a bug when v20 launched to no avail! for people that can do coding and stuff--->when launching file from MacOS side, Parallels ignores Windows shell's file association thus not leveraging DDE which means on Windows side it does not check for open instances of reported apps like Autodesk Inventor, SSMS and for my use case ZwCAD, just launches a new one. From Windows side (windows explorer) everything works fine. i would try to instal Parallels tools from 18 and 19 versions but i just dont have time and nerves to fiddle with something that used to work in v18 and v19. this is mind boggling for me so i just stick with workaround. cheers!
Hello @SteveK16, We would recommend you to re-install the Parallels tools manually by following this KB article. If the issue reoccurs, collect an additional technical report 'https://kb.parallels.com/9058 ' (click Parallels icon || > Help > Send technical data > check "Attach screenshots..." > press Send Report) and send the report's 9-digit ID in a reply to this thread.
I am having the same issue with my new install of windows 11 on my M4 max mac. When opening files from the macOS side in an app that is only on the windows side, multiple instances of the same app open instead of opening the new file in the current running app. Specifically. i am opening .ipt Inventor files in inventor. This does not happen if i click on the files from the windows side. Newly opened files open in the already opened inventor application. When i was on Parallels 19 and on my 2018 intel mac this behavior did not happen. This is only happening since I am on my new M4 Max mac and with Parallels 20 and arm based windows. This is a new VM. I have tried reinstalling parallels tools, an changing a bunch of sharing options with nothing working. Technical report ID . 486945895
