What is Expanding Disk and Total Size?

Hi, whats the difference between 'Expanding Disk' found in Parallels settings>Hardwarre>Hard disk and 'Total Size' found in Parallels settings>General?

Currently I've set my expanding disk to be at 35gb and in my VM Win7, i can see 35gb Drive C in My Computer.
While on the outside the Total Size is showing 43gb.

Which one is the limiting factor if im looking to lock my Virtual OS hard disk consumption on my mac?

Hi Keith, the goal of the expanding disk is to save disk space in the primary OS. It cannot provide you with an infinitely expanding disk for your guest OS. Please refer to this article to know more about expanding disk in Parallels Desktop. The total size is to refer to .pvm size. Please refer to this article to know the disk management.

Hi thanks for the reply. I think i've got what you meant.

I've checked on my primary OS and .pvm file size is roughly 43gb. In my guest OS, my Drive C is 35gb max. Where does the extra 8gb comes from? is 8gb the OS system size which is not accounted for in Expanding Disk?

Correct me if im wrong, Expanding disk is referring to the maximum amount of size my Guest OS can go?
and Total Size is actually Expanding disk + The OS size itself?

Bump.

Anyone has the same issue here? I've set my expanding disk to 35gb, but my .hdd file keep expanding to 40++.

is this normal?
