I am currently using the trial of PD8, however, after the installation was complete, and it brought me to the windows log on screen, I am unable to. It has the username, but it won't accept credentials. The user for the MAC side does not use a password to log in. I tried without password and it does not work. I followed the steps (http://kb.parallels.com/en/114193) from another post to use the terminal to set a password, but I get an error that I cannot run that command until the virtual tools have been installed. I am unable to install the tools because I cannot log in.

You haven't listed what type of os for the VM, but if it was one downloaded from Parallels try leaving it blank or entering parallels as the password.

The OS is Windows 7, and it was part of the Parallels package. I will try your suggestion to use parallels as the password, because as mentioned in my initial post, I tried leaving it blank.

So what's the answer to this question? I'm running into the same thing except on a Windows 8 install. I'm not doing an upgrade. I bought a windows 8 system builder disk, made an iso and installed fresh from that.

After doing the install, this dialog for "Other user" appeared. It has my username (local) filled in, but the password for that account isn't working.

Following the advice of http://kb.parallels.com/en/114193, I also found it fails at the same step:

Scotts-MacBook-Pro.local> prlctl exec fe15efff-5b60-4ad7-a5ca-5574ec5ca98b net user
Unable to open new session in this virtual machine. Make sure the latest version of Parallels Tools is installed in this virtual machine and it has finished booting.

I've tried using no password, parallels, the password for my account on the mac. Nothing works. What's the solution here?

    Some things I've also tried:
    1) Completely starting over, that didn't work. Same issue
    2) Continuing the install manually, then I tried to install the parallels tools into the virtual machine. That didn't do anything either.

Any ideas? I've got 4 days left on my free trial, and I'm not going to pay $80 to find myself in the same situation ;)

For the next person looking for a solution this problem:

Make sure Express Installation is unchecked!!!
