PVM and other files, folders are not in the desired directory (Ver 8.0.18354)

Hello,

I have 4 virtual machines installed:

  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows 8 Professional
  • Ubuntu Linux

In my ~/Documents/Parallels/ , I see three of the PVM folders present where Windows XP is missing.

I did a little investigation and found that this PVM is stored in /Users/Shared/Parallels . Also contained here is ./Backups and ./Problem\ Reports/ .

I am concerned about having a consistent layout of the data. I would like to have the PVMs located in the same directory. Consider either of the two scenarios:

  1. Move the XP PVM from /Users/Shared/Parallels to ~/Documents/Parallels/
  2. Move the three other PVMs from ~/Documents/Parallels/ to /Users/Shared/Parallels/

How safe is it to move the directories from one place to another. I'd prefer not to trip copy-protection flags or break links internal to Parallels to a severity of requiring a reinstallation.

Hello Tim,

Only one difference between locations is that in Shared folder your virtual machines may be launched from different Mac accounts (users profiles). It is only matter of permissions.

So if you would like to have your virtual machines shared between others Mac user accounts - you put them into the Shared folder, if you don't need it, you leave your virtual machines in your /Documents/Parallels and transfer the .pvm file of Windows XP to that folder.

Please note that you will need to "reregister" your virtual machines since you move it.

Thank you very much, The kb article was very helpful and exactly the information I was looking for. I moved the virtual machines and didn't even have to "reregister" my Microsoft license.

Tested, everything works great.
