Parallels Desktop occasionally ignoring mouse events (delayed scrolling / missing steps)

Dear support.

In Parallels 27.0.1 (but already since a while back), Parallels Desktop "misses" some mouse events in some configurations.

The cause is that Parallels Desktop gets overwhelmed when the mouse reports a lot events (move, scroll, etc.). Most low end wired mice, and Bluetooth mice have a 125 Hz reporting rate, and Parallels works fine with that. But gaming or high performance mice, like my Logitech G309, goes to 1000 Hz; at this rate, Parallels ignores most of the events.

In order to reproduce, connect a mouse that has a high reporting rate, and configure it that way via Logitech G HUB for example. In my case (M4 Pro), the problem with Parallels is fairly visible at 500 Hz already, and somewhat at 250 Hz. Just use any OS in Parallels, and try to scroll at the same time you are moving the mouse quickly: the scroll events are ignored. Stop moving the mouse and scroll: it works every time.

You can also set the "Optimize for games" mode in Parallels, and you'll see that the mouse moves very slowly at a high reporting rate. The cause is the same: Parallels only processes ~125 events a second, and therefore 7/8 of the events are being dropped, making the mouse move slowly.

Hello,

Thank you for your post.

We appreciate the investigation you have done for this and have created a ticket and will be reaching out to you accordingly so we can further discuss this.

Please check your email.

I've seen similar performance anomalies (M4 MAX, 27.0.3) and had some back and forth with support trying to diagnose, but I attribute it to OpenGL video issues. Mouse clicks wouldn't initiate the expected screen results (in Solidworks) until additional clicks/movement "forced" the screen update. Lots of back and forth and ultimately, it was not resolved. Support did however include a boot flag that corrected the issues for me. Ultimately, the ticket was closed, despite not being fully resolved. I am hoping that the next major build will correct it.

Not sure if this will help for your issue, but who knows?

From my own investigation, it's the mouse reporting rate.

To be honest, I would recommend Parallels employees to justify the purchase of a proper gaming mouse for testing. After all, Parallels is also advertised for gaming and it is great at that, which means people who want to play are likely to have a gaming mouse, and they almost always come with 1000 Hz reporting rate or more (my G304 / G305 in the West or vice versa, has that, and it was like 30-40 bucks).

You can try mouse-tamer, an open-source utility which grabs mice events, aggregates them and re-emits them at 125 Hz. It's done well enough that you probably won't notice too much the difference in mouse movement and acceleration. You might also find that useful to save battery life, as input handling in WindowServer consumes a tremendous amount of CPU on macOS, yes even on a M4 it can approach 100% of one CPU core when actively moving the mouse at 500-1000 Hz.

The other alternative is to try to set a 125 Hz mode in your mouse settings (usually labelled "power saving"). Also, be sure to remove any software that may be tampering with input handling, such as Karabiner, Logi+ tools / G HUB, perhaps LinearMouse, BetterTouchTool, …

Now, OpenGL may also be causing scrolling issues in your individual app of course, I cannot talk for that. Any serious performance issue is likely to create stuttering or even dropped events, resulting in similar symptoms.

I have the same problem with Parallels 27.0.3 and Windows 11 on a MacBook Pro M3 running macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1. Windows freezes regularly. I can move the mouse, but I cannot click on anything.

Hello,

Thank you all for your feedback.

Please note that we have already submitted this issue to our Engineering team for further investigation.
