Mandriva linux report: sound is STRANGE....
The title says it all...
Firstoff, GUI install worked. No funny install required except make sure you do NOT "test video configuration" in the GUI installer, as that currupts the X that the installer is running. Ironically I had an old laptop that had this same problem, so I think its a problem with their installer script.
I'm not sure if it is supposed to work. 16-bit color mode works fine. I have to use the vesa driver to get any picture. It is using the intel-810 kernel module. (future modules are in parens)
Sound works for both recording and playback. I have to set the input type to the same number of channels the mac thinks it has for sound input to work. i.e. 2 channels for the built in mic, one channel for a USB mic selected on the OSX side. Sound does NOT work when using an OSS driver. (snd-intel8x0 works, i_810audio does not work).
I do get a bunch of errors out of audacity about the sample rate being wierd: 61154 instead of 9600 for input and 44354 instead of 44100 for output. It still works though...
Networking "just works" (ne2k-pci) Promisc mode on the network card works.
It thinks it has a "camino 2 chipset" mainboard. (piix and usb-uhci)
Mouse wheel works, which is nice.
I'm not sure how to switch virtual terminals. Any collection of fn control alt and F1 seems to do nothing.
My macbook can just barly handle WinXp and Mandriva both running system updates at the same time. (with 512mb of ram each, and 2gb in the macbook)
Also of note: recording in XP (with my hack) and recording in Mandriva both work at the same time
. No hack is needed for linux
.
I have not yet tried plugging in any USB devices.
