I have already reverted to 11.0 using the solution mentioned by @RichardM4 -- will re-applying the 11.1 update trigger the problem again? I understand it's "fixable" using the process you link to, but I'd be much more confident knowing that this is a low-probability problem, or (much much better) that Parallels has actually fixed the issue altogether.

Hi Nelson, The BSOD error occurred because of Corrupted prl_boot.sys file. Kindly update Parallels Desktop 11 to the latest build. The corrupted driver file needs to be replaced. To replace the file please follow the instructions mentioned in this article.

Was there a problem with the way I posed the question? Let me try again: if I update (again), am I likely to see the same problem (again)? If the upgrade will fail (again), I'd rather not upgrade (again) until you guys fix this problem properly. I'd rather not spend the time messing about with USB sticks and reboots to "fix" the upgrade.

Hello Nelson, It seems that you're on outdated build of Parallels Desktop 11, please update Parallels Desktop to the latest build 11.1.1 (32312). You can update to the latest build as suggested in this article. Latest version always available here: http://www.parallels.com/directdownload/pd11/ Please note that Parallels Tools also needs to be updated (Actions > Update Parallels Tools). Please see this article to know more about Parallels Desktop 11 for Mac updates summary.
