old versions of mac os x

Hello, Knowledge base article 124223 specifies that older Mac OS X versions up to Mac OS X 10.5 are supported, however there is a note with older versions specifying: "Requires a Mac computer that supports the operating system as a host OS." It is not clear to me what exactly is meant here...
