This is a new problem in PD8. I'm sure it will get resolved.

Workaround Reducing the amount of RAM available to windows from 2 GB to 1.5 GB (out of 4 GB) seems to have resolved the problem, at least temporarily.

Update: looks like this issue was not caused by parallels after all.
