Virtual PC is an emulator that runs on PowerPC machines. You're Mac has an Intel processor. If you want to run Windows, you need Parallels.

Sorry to hear about your problems. But most people use Parallels just fine, so I'd say the problem is with your XP installation, not Parallels....
It all depends upon the OS in your virtual machine. In Windows, I think you right click on Computer and check Properties.
