I have never seen this kind of behavior and I leave my MBP C2D 2 GB running Parallels 24/7. I use 1024 for my XP VM.
I have simply not seen any of this with 3170. Perhaps you could describe your system in more detail?

You always use Text Edit to open and modify the PVS file. Glad that RC3 made the difference for you re: the first issue.
RC3 is Release Candidate 3 of Parallels. It has far enhanced USB support than the "boxed" version 1970. It isn't clear to me from your posts...

You might want to see what your video memory set is, as it may have reverted to a lower number in the updating process. I would think 16 MB would...
Check what is getting loaded as Windows starts. A native way to do that is using MSCONFIG.EXE although there are lots of 3rd party apps as well....
