Ubuntu 7.10 Server Edition: Kernel too old?

hello,

I just got stuck while installing Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) in Parallels (using Tiger on a macbookpro 15" standard specs.) The installation procedure is quite neat an clean. But after booting from Grub I can only see the following err-msg.:

-----------------------
Starting up ...
PANIC: CPU too old for this kernel.
-----------------------

I even tried to remove the quiet and splash bootflags but the panic remains the main - no debugging msg. at all.

Has anyone experienced the same phenomenon?

the fix doesn't work for me.

I'm running on a macbook pro with the lastest updates and i follow the instructions exactly (i've followed every variation on them anyway, just in case) and when i enter ''

apt-get update

'' i get the message /bin/sh: apt-get: not found.
Help please.

The issue has been reproduced. It's turned out to be a bug. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.

The only thing we can currently propose is to update Linux kernel to 2.6.24.

How do I do that

How do I upgrade it to the newer kernel when that screen/message comes up?

what is the command to get the new kernel?

Nobody really answered post #3 above, but the proposed solution/workaround doesn't work.

apt-get does not seem to be installed, so the "fix" isn't a fix in that you can't get the generic kernel.

Is build 5584 fixed? Is there another workaround if not? How can I install apt-get?

EDIT: Okay, so I think I get it now. The workaround doesn't give accurate instructions. What you need to do is choose rescue from the first screen and then proceed with the install step by step (do NOT choose the option to start a shell. This is where I went wrong because the workaround says to choose this). You'll get to a screen where it asks which partition to load, choose the first one. Then you get to a screen that allows you to load a shell. THIS is the shell the workaround refers to. From this shell, apt-get is a valid command and you can run the commands int he workaround.

Hope this helps somebody who is struggling to interpret the workaround link.
