Back Slash doesn't work

The back slash on my keyboard does not work in the DOS window. Any suggestions on how to get it to work?

I find that I get '<' and '>' instead of '\' and '|' in Ubuntu. I thought this is linux setup problem, but maybe it isn't. Also I sometimes can't type anything in Ubuntu's Firefox 1.0.7 while other Gnome apps work fine.

Ubuntu is set up to use a 104 key keyboard with a standard US layout.

My Mac actually has a German keyboard layout but I also use a US keymapping even in OSX (if that's somehow relevant).

I get the same behavior in a new Fedora Core 5 install. On a Solaris 10 install the '\' and '|' keys don't work at all.
 
I got that in freebsd6 as well, well in console mode | does nothing, but in X i get a >. Using unix without the pipe key is just not fun.

Pipe & Backslash don't work in SuSE 10 either

I have the same problem. I get <> instead of |\.

I've installed OpenSuSE 10 in a vm w/384 meg ram.
 
Solaris too ......

Keyboard mapping in this version is hosed for UNIX/Linux I guess. Its unuseable without the slash and pipe .....
 
Same with the Japanese keyboard (wireless)

Hi,

I have an Apple Wireless Keyboard with Japanese layout and
I have a similar problem. Japanese keyboard means that there
are some differences in location of some of the non-alphanumerics.

Here are problems I am seeing.

1) I cannot enter the key two places right of "L".
Supposed to be "]"(right square bracket and right curly bracket)
on the Japanese keyboard. Located left of the "return" key.

2) I cannot enter the key three places right of "0".
Supposed to be "Â¥"(Back slash and pipe) on the Japanese keyboard.
Located left of the "delete" key.

3) I cannot enter the key four places right of "M".
Supposed to be "_"(underscore) on the Japanese keyboard.
Located left of the "shift" key.
 
No keycode is genereted for those keys...

I'm using MacBookPro 15inch with Japanese keyboard.
I have the same problem running WinXP on Parallels Beta3 and 4.

Also, when I changed the keymapping on WinXp to ordinal US(101 key) mode,
I could not enter '~'. It is not good workaround.

I guess, no keycode is passed to the guest OS from Paralells for those keys.
And, '~' key (in US keymap) is missing in our Japanese keyboard.
There is no way to fix this problem by guest OS side.

(Happily, I'm using WinXP with Parallels Tool. So I use clipboard transfer function to enter those chars. But it's not cool...)

Please fix this problem!

I tested Beta5. Now I can enter ']' char.

But I have still problem in inputting '¥'(backslash) and '_'(underscore). The underscore key is located at left side of right shift key. and Backslash key is located at left side of delete key on macintosh japanese keyboard. Backslash key on japanese keyboard is a bit tricky since the printed mark is yen mark and the genereted keycode (on MacOS) is different from ordinal backslash key. A hint is that the keycode 0xa5 (yen mark) should be treated as 0x5c (backslash).
 
Thank you for this info - will will take Japanese keyboard into consideration and will surely try to fix problems you informed.
 
I tested Parallels Desktop RC with Japanese Keyboard.
Mr. fukutax's issue has not been fixed yet.
This issue is higher priority than any other one for me.
 
A hint? for japanese keymap

I think, more detailed hints are needed to solve this problem.
So I'm writing this.

Here is a part of jp106 keymap used in my linux box.

( the file is located at /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/jp106.kmap.gz in my Debian distro)
...
keycode 89 = backslash underscore
...
keycode 124 = backslash bar
...
keycode 181 = backslash underscore
...
keycode 183 = backslash bar
...

An important point here is that there are two (or more) backslash keys(!).

The '_' key shuold behave backslash key but its keycode seems different from yen mark key that also behaves as backslash key.

Also, some keycodes which values are over 127 are used here.

If more hints are needed, let me know.

This one has the actual keyboard layout and the usb keycode table.

The first and second picture is the keyboad layout of a typical Japanese
Windows keyboard.

The third and fourth picture is the keyboard layout of a typical Japanese
Macintosh keyboard.

In each case, the first picture shows the actual keyboard layout.
The numbers on shown on the second picture corresponds to
the left most column in the table.

The second column on the table is what is printed on the key top
in a typical Japanese Windows keyboard.

The third column on the table is what is printed on the key top
in a Japanese Macintosh keyboard.

I don't know what fourth colum is intended for.

The fifth and the right most column is the usb keycode.

I cannot commit myself to buy the product unless this issue
is fixed.

Please fix it before the release and before the price returns to $49 !
