Shared Mac Applications

Hi,

running XP with Parallels (build 5160) on top of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), I ve run in problems with shared Mac apps. In this forum I've read about lots of problems sharing Windows apps to the Mac, but I have problems the other way round, i.e. with sharing Mac apps to Windows.

1. After some try-and-error, everyhing worked fine, i.e. I could open XP files with Mac applications (that's what I need), by associating (inside XP) the XP file extensions to the shared Mac applications. But suddenly the shared apps are no longer available in XP - in fact the complete (virtuell?) directory is gone, where the links has been stored. I tried to populate the Shared Mac applications, but this doesn't change anything; I tried to reinstall the Parallels Tools, but this also didn't solve the problem.
How can I get back my Mac applications in Windows XP ?

2. I don't understand, which Mac applications are populated to XP, and when they are offered in XP. In fact I'm using some unusual extensions and special Mac applications, which are able to handle these files. How do I tell Paralells, that these applications should be populated ?

Hi,

1. Shared Mac applications are resides:
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Parallels\Shared Applications

2. Parallels Desktop recursive scans /Applications folder to populate the Mac applications.

(1) yes, I know about
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Parallels\Shared Applications, but this directory suddenly is empty, and populating the Mac apps manually does not create new entries in it !?

May be the problem is my localized version of Windows ? The German Windows version uses C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<User>\Anwendungsdaten\Parallels\... But the first time this directory was used to store Parallels' exe-files. And even if I create an empty 'international' directory (so in my case
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Parallels\Shared Applications
this doesn't bring the Mac apps back.

btw: this user is an admin account on XP, so that's also no problem.


(2) that sounds easy, but only some apps in /applications are populated - at least on my installation before ? Might be, this is a problem caused by the open point above ?

Update: suddenly everything works fine again. I switched OFF the Mac apps population in the VM configuration, restartet the VM, switched it ON again, restartet, and the MAC apps where available again. The directory did not contain the Mac apps until I connected the XP file extension with a new application, afterwards some Mac apps appeared.

OK, I don't have to understand this, but now it works again, and I'm happy ;)

I've looked at some of your posts about associating Mac applications with files in Windows. I think I'm missing the first step, because I can't populate the Office for Mac 2008 applications when I hit Populate under Mac Applications. I'm seeing that I am first supposed to get the application into a shared folder, but I can't find the folder that you indicated: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Parallels\Shared Applications. I don't have the application data folder. Is there an easy way for me to get the Office applications into that shared folder? I normally think I'm not this dense, but I'm not sure what I am doing at this point.
