Cannot open images from shared folder in Photoshop

Mac OS X Mavericks. Parallels 8 desktop running a Windows 7 VM. I am unable to open image files in Photoshop CC that are on the Parallels' shared drive (mounted to /Volumes/C). "Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)."

I can save files onto the shared drive from Photoshop, but cannot open them. To open them, I need to copy them onto the local disk first.

Any idea as to what is wrong?
