Using Multiple VM's, can I use windows application from the "currently running" VM?

Hi.

I'm using Parallels Desktop 7 on a Mac to run Windows 7 and 8 on separate VM's.

I see that on Mac OS X, you can designate an application (which is tied to its VM) to open a certain file type.
For example, I can set the Mac OS X to open .docx files using MS Word 2010 on the Windows 7 VM.

BUT

Let's say I have MS Word 2010 installed on the Windows 8 VM, and the Windows 8 VM is running (while the Windows 7 VM is shut down or paused.) In common sense, a .docx file should open using MS Word 2010 on the Windows 8 VM.
Instead, Parallels Desktop would boot the Windows 7 VM to open the file. (Which is technically fine since that's the VM whose MS Word is designated to open the file.)

Without re-designating windows applications, is there a way to open a file using a Windows application from the "currently running" VM? That is, if the Windows 7 VM is running, MS Word from that VM is used, and if the Windows 8 VM is running, MS Word from that VM is used.

Thanks.
