Internet connection issues

guest OS: XP
problem: internet can be connetioned when you open the explorer first time. However, you will be unable to open any following links. You will get a messeage "cannot find the page".


I also reinstalled the Paralles, did not make anything good, sould I reinstall the XP (that will be very painful)? or I have to reinstall the OX for this Mac?

have you installed and run parallels tools, for network drivers and left the network adapter in the vm as default ethernet, plus is your mac able to connect before you boot into xp.
 
Thanks for response. yes, I installed the tools and the Mac was connected with internet and run OK. In addition, even XP showed internet problem, the Mac is still OK with internet connection. Very confusing thing is that my guest OS (XP) can be connected for the very first 2 minutes, then is kind of dead. Any further suggestion?

Try direct ethernet, what I was thinking is if your router is filtering/stopping the connection e.g MAC address settings but this should not normally be the case as you are using the same hardware. Check the network adapter settings and make sure that you do not have host only networking enabled and choose the default adapter setting.
 
I tried the cable. It seems to be fine whenn using cable (stable for the connection) when using the XP. Thank you for the suggestion. But it opened another question: why the connection was made for the first couple minutes then stopped when I was wireless mode, even if the internet small icon showed OK. something wrong witht my router? This is really frustrating. But again, thanks for the suggestion. Any further clue for solve this problem?

when I using wireless, as I said the internet was virtually dead even if the icon indicated as connected. So I run property and repaing, a messeage pop-up saying that the IP address could not be renewed. What should I do with this? If I understand the thing correctly, the IP is automatically assigned, right? Thanks.

It sounds to me that you have the Mac and Windows vying for 1 ip address. In my case with the MacMini having both, i run the Mac on Ethernet cable to router and VM thru parallels thru wireless.

like phil said it could be your router was blocking you on MAC address, the VM will have a seperate MAC address, ok this is not the IP address, this is an address that had been hardcoded in Network cards for years as a means of security.

"In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most forms of networking equipment."

In windows, go to Start, then Run then type "cmd" (without quotes) and press enter
then at prompt type "ipconfig /all" and look for "Physical Address. . . . . . . . . :"
that is the MAC address that Parallels has assigned to this VM

also is your router running DHCP?

If the connection works for a while and stops, the most likely cause is another device on the network with the same IP. This could be the host, or another device.

To use bridged networking with wireless, you need to be sure the DHCP server (required unless you use hard coded IP addresses) sees the guest and host as different machines. Depending on the DHCP server you have, this may require that the machine name be unique on the network segment, the MAC address be unique, or both. The MAC address is a number usually hard wired into the NIC to insure a unique ID, and has occasionally been leveraged in access points to add a small amount of security. The default is for the host and guest to have the same MAC address, so you may need to change it in the Parallels console. Edit your VM, select the NIC, click advanced, and change the MAC value to somethig unique on your network.

Originally, the MAC address was hard wired into each NIC, to guarantee uniqueness, but it wasn't long before the ability to set the MAC address from software appeared, nullifying that guarantee. Cards still come with unique addresses, with each manufacturer having a unique prefix.
 
I have also expreienced a similar problem whereby I cannot connect to the internet through Windows XP at all. It says there is limited or connectivity and when I attempt to repair the connection it says that the IP address cannot be renewed. I am using a direct ethernet connection which works fine through Mac. I think I am suffering the same problem with two devices trying to use the same IP.

Could you please explain to me (step-by-step) how to solve this problem please. I am not all that technically minded and could not really follow the advice given above.

thanks guys, I was out of town for a while. so I did not give the feedback on time.
I tired to sue cable for XP. It is true that the connection is OK. But for the wireless. the problem is still there---working for the first few minutes and then down.
I just wondering that your suggestion here is a step by step one or an idea? I am not a very skillful Mac person yet. thanks for further info regarding this issue.
