Issue in regards hard drive space...*frustrated*

Hi guys,

I'm really sorry to bother you guys and I know you're not tech support or anything but I've really searched high and low for an answer to my problem and to no avail. If you guys can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated!

Here it is...

So I've been using Parallel Desktop with my Macbook Pro for about, 2-3 months and it's great! It's gives me the best of both worlds and I haven't had an issue untill today.

So I was converting some video for my company today and for some reason, my iChat wasn't working. I didn't think nothing of it cause I could just use AIM in PD. Now the videos were on my PC Desktop and I file transfered them to my Macbook via AIM and worked on them in Vegas Video on the Windows screen.

The problem,

After I finished uploading my video, I went to delete the files (in parallel) but I notice that the space that was taken up by the files on my hard drive hasn't changed. I searched my entire computer for anything with the same name and came up with nothing.

I started with 35gb of space
added 10 gb of video
deleted 10 gb of video
still only have 25 gb of free space.

I have no idea what else to do :-(
 
Hello Grayfox,

The space taken by virtual disk on Mac side does not get reduced when you delete files in Guest OS. You can decrease the disk by Parallels Compressor (go to Parallels Desktop menu bar -> Actions -> Run Parallels Compressor).

Are you talking about the space that gets taken up by Parallels itself?

I'm saying that I put a file on my Mac OS X desktop...then dragged it to my Windows XP window to work on it. When I was done I deleted the the file from my computer completely and the hard drive space that was taken up by the video wasn't taken off.
 
I'm talking about the space taken by virtual hard disk - .hdd file.
Please use Parallels Compressor to clean up disk space. See Parallels Desktop for Mac User Guide, p. 246 for details.
You can also icrease your disk capacity with Image Tool (Applications -> Parallels).
Are you checking the hard drive space from Windows or from Mac side?

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing.

I didn't do anything special with the Hard Drive when I installed Parallel...and I'm not talking bout the space that Parallel took up when I installed.

When I check my HD space available in my OSX or in Parallel, the information is the same. When I downloaded this video, it took up 10GB of space. So it went from 35GB of free space on my HD to 25GB. I use a PC program called Vegas Video to work on the video so once I downloaded the video, I drug it over to the Windows XP window to work on it. Once I was done editing the video, I uploaded it to my server. So at this point, I no longer need the video on my computer. So I put it in the trash and empty the trash.

Here is the problem,

Once I emptied the trash, you would think that my Hard Drive would go back to 35GB of free space but it didnt. It still reads at 25GB of space. So for some reason, when I drag something to Windows, the space on the hard drive wont change even if I delete the file.

*really wished that parallel had a customer support phone number i could call :-(
 
I have exactly the same problem, which can not be resolved in any way by using Compressor ! The only solution I found is to put one by one every file from the trash back to C: by using always the same name for each file and replace the previous one in C: with the new one from the trash. By doing so, I won again about 20G but am very disappointed that Parallel is not able to manage deleted files in the trash.... very unprofessional I must say. I hope a serious solution will be proposed soon.
 
Oh man, I was so worried that I was the only one with this issue! Yeah this has completely turned me off of Parallels. Pretty much I can't put anything in Parallel if there is ever a chance that I'm gonna take it off...cause I'll never get that space back. :-/

Pretty lame since the main reason I use Parallels is for video editing programs and what not.

Compressor is supposed to clean up disk space. What exactly do you mean when you say that it does not help?

I ran the compressor and the 10GB of space that was not put back on my overall hard drive space was still, missing.

Could you please provide the following screenshots:

1. Through Finder on Mac side find the .hdd file in your VM folder, right click it and choose "Get Info" from the menu. I would like to see this pane.

2. Launch Parallels and start Windows. From "Start" menu open "My Computer", right click the drive C and choose "Properties" from the menu. Please attach this screenshot to your next post too.

Chfn, did you try to clear the trash before running the Compressor?
