    Hi

    Trying to get X server in Gentoo guest going. startx gives following errors:

    using vt 7
    (WW) ****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0xff00 e: 0xff0f correcting
    (WW) ****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0xff00 e: 0x4000feff correcting
    Requesting insufficient memory window! start: 0x0 end: 0xfff size 0x40000000
    (EE) Cannot find a replacement memory range
    (EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
    (EE) Screens(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found

    I've ran the xorgconfig script and selected the VESA driver. I've installed and loaded the vesafb kernel module.

    Any ideas?

    Try running ddcprobe (it's part of the xresprobe package on Debian, I don't know where it is on Gentoo) and making sure the resolutions listed by the emulated video card match the resolutions you're trying to set in xorgconfig. It looks like you're trying to choose a resolution that needs more video memory than is being emulated by Parallels.

    Thanks for your reply. I've left gentoo for now and installed a Ubuntu 6.06 guest instead. Inspecting its xorg.conf gives me some ideas to get gentoo working in the future, but since it is compiling for vrtualised generic hardware, I'm not sure I see any advantage now with Gentoo as a guest.
