    I am running the new beta of parallels. I am running it off of my boot camp partition.

    For antivirus I was gogin to use the windows live one care. I downloaded and installed it. I get a message that It can't turn on the antivirus portion of the live one care and I should email microsoft. I did that. They sent me the following reponse on how to fix the problem but I am aftaid to do this as it could interefere with my parallels. Anyone know if this is safe?

    Thank you for contacting Windows Live OneCare Online Support. My name is Jacky and I will be assisting you with this issue. For your reference, the case number that we will use while working on this issue is SRZ736. You can contact me directly by writing an email to [email protected] with the case ID in the subject line.

    In the case log, you indicated that Windows Live OneCare shows a red status and the error message is "Antivirus provider is unable to start - Contact Support". If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

    I understand the inconvenience that you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

    This issue may occur if a third party kernel is loaded which prevents the OneCare Antivirus component from being installed successfully. Let's try the following method to fix the issue:

    Step 1: Remove third party theme application
    ============
    1. Click Start, click Run, type "appwiz.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Open box and press Enter Key.
    2. Click the program that customizes the startup graphics such as "StyleXP", "BootXP", "WindowsBlinds" or "LogonUI Boot Randomizer", and then click Remove.

    Step 2: Remove third party kernel
    ============
    1. Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
    3. Under System Startup, click Edit. The Boot.ini will be opened in Notepad.
    4. Click Save As on the File menu, type "boot_backup.ini" for the file name, and then click OK. Close Notepad. This is a back up of the Boot.ini file.
    5. Under System Startup, click Edit.
    6. Locate the line of text containing "/KERNEL=". Delete the text "/KERNEL = ntkppvs_.exe " from that line.
    7. Save the Boot.ini as C:\Boot.INI and close Notepad. Click OK twice.
    8. Restart the computer.

    Step 3: Reinstall AVHotfix
    ============
    1. Click Start, click Run, type CMD in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Type the following command and press ENTER:

    CD /D %Programfiles%\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\Staging

    3. Now it should display the following message:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\Staging

    4. Type the following command and press ENTER:

    WindowsXP-KB914882-x86-ENU.exe /overwriteoem

    5. Follow the instructions on screen to finish the installation. Then restart the computer and check to see if the issue still occurs.

    Collect Information:
    ====================
    If the issue persists, please send some information to me for further research:

    1. Open Windows Explorer and locate the following folder if Windows is installed on the C drive:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\

    2. Double click the file named OneCareSupport or OneCareSupport.exe. It will begin to collect the information.
    3. When it finishes collecting the information, note the shown path and name of the information file. (Generally, it is C:\OneCareSupportData.zip)
    4. Please send this file to [email protected] and I will do further research for you.

    Please try my suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    Jacky

    Just an educated guess, because I haven't tried it, but I suspect that we are all going to have to choose between running XP in BootCamp (i.e. direct boot) with all the bells and whistles we like, or running it in Parallels with limitations. I suspect that switching back and forth, trying to run in both modes interchangeably will continue to be problematic for quite a while, if it ever gets to be possible, and there will always be things that will run in bootcamp but not Parallels.

    Popular add-ons will be accommodated one at a time with special tweaks to Parallels, but they won't ever catch up -- it's an impossible task.

    In your case, I suspect that Parallels tools for bootcamp will be incompatible with the AV program so you will have to choose one or the other (if I'm guessing correctly). FWIW, I have MacAfee AV working in Parallels just fine, so that may be an option if the one care option doesn't work. There are some free AV products as well.
