I can not find my windows OS installation CD. When I try to open Parallels it asks me to install my Windows XP professional OS again, apparently it may have been lost somehow. I may have an other older copy of Windows OS at home. I do have data and programs installed on it that I do not wish to lose. Can you give me suggestion for the solution? Thank you. T.
Windows XP installation cd i have an almost similar problem. I bought and downloaded Parallels 4 for my Mac OS X today. I get as far as user name and Window product key. I can't go any farther because it then asks me to install my Window XP installation cd which I do not have. I went to Microsoft to see if I could download Windows onto my computer, but got quite lost trying to find anything remotely acceptable to my situation. For some reason I thought that the Windows automatically came with the Parallels app. Do I now have to go to the store and buy a Windows cd? Is there no way I can purchase a license online? Thanks Beth
bethy: Windows isn't included with Parallels. You need to have an existing install CD and product key to build the virtual machine. However, if you have an existing PC that you're replacing, the Parallels Transporter app can pull all the necessary files out of the PC and into a new virtual machine on the Mac. Does that help?
Thank you very much, ddahle for your input. I had Parallels years ago and that was outdated, so I've bought the Parallels 4. It seems I've lost my Windows app along the way as well. HD died and had to replace it. It's been a while but thought it all came as a package. Thank you very much again for your advice. I am on my way! Well, tomorrow anyway, as it seems there's no downloading of the Windows app other than upgrading. Cheers! Beth
Backup VM and install this build http://www.parallels.com/en/download/file/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-3224-Mac-en.dmg as described in http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790
Similar Problem, but OEM Hey, John @ Parallels, I used the transporter to move my HP windows XP operating system and files over to my new macbook pro, only to find that I cannot activate the XP software, because it is OEM. If I buy XP software, will I be able to upgrade directly onto my VM, or do I have to upgrade the XP software on my old HP laptop, and then transport my old machine to the same VM or a new VM again?
You can try to perform Windows repair on migrated Virtual Machine, the most probably it will work , actually we didn't test such scenario, as it was out of our minds
Thanks. After thinking about it some more, I'm probably going to just upgrade the xp on the HP laptop, and then transport it again. I would like to shrink the size of my xp VM
Thank you. I am not sure what is the best way to backup the VM before I download the link. Could you please advise?
