In case this helps someone else...

I recently installed the Windows 7 RC in a new VM and deleted my old WinXP VM (well, I moved it to an external drive, so it should be as if I deleted it to Parallels). I've been having trouble with file associations. I want to use the Windows versions of Word and Excel instead of the Mac versions as my defaults, but Finder was not letting me choose those apps to Open With. For Excel, it would list Microsoft Office Excel as the default, but double-clicking the document in Finder did not actually open Excel (either Mac or Win version).

I tried using Smart Select to tweak the Open With settings, but XLS and XLSX were not showing up as valid extensions in the Smart Select dialog. My solution was to manually open a file of each type in Excel, then while the file is open, right-click the dock icon and choose Smart Select from there. The extension for the open file had been added to the list and was selectable.

One other thing to note is that opening a .XLSX file and doing a SaveAs to get an active .XLS file did not result in the .XLS extension being added to the Smart Select dialog. It took actually using the Open command in Excel on an existing .XLS file to kick start things.
