This is an upgrade question for which I can not find the answer. I have an IMAC recently upgraded to 10.6.2. I am running boot camp and Parallels 5 with one copy of Vista Ultimate 32 bit for both. I would like to upgrade to Win 7 64 bit and do not know how to proceed and in what sequence things should be done. I understand I can't do an upgrade because of the 32 bit - 64 bit issue - is that correct? Any help would be appreciated.... Thanks, applelisa

As far as I understand (from a recent conversation who's trying to do the same thing on a real PC), you'll basically have to re-install Windows and any programs you're using. There is no upgrade path from Vista 32bit to Win7 64 bit - i.e. there is no way to do anything but a completely new install.

Shaddam IV - Thanks for the reply. If I decide to stay with the 32 bit version of Windows 7, which is the best way to update? Can I just run boot camp and then do an update or does it have to be via Parallels to keep just one copy of Windows 7? Thanks, Bill

I don't know whether it's possible to update Vista 32 bit to Windows7 32 bit. But I'd try to update the BootCamp partition if you plan to run Parallels off that. (Or do you have two VM's - one running off BootCamp and the other a separate machine?)

I tried the same path towards installing - Windows XP Professional SP2/32 bit -> Windows 7 64 bit

Seems you need to upgrade from 64 bit OS.

I ended up destroying the Windows 7 UPGRADE software, receiving a credit card refund for this and then placing a new order for the full version.

This version installed without a hiccup. It took a little while to find out how to get things working together. The main issue now is that the 64 bit IE browser is frequently subject to APPCRASH.

I am using 27 inch iMac i7 Intel, 4GB RAM. Will upgrade RAM to 8GB today - seems necessary.
