What happens when you directly connect them?

This is a guess, but worth a try.

When you boot up your MAC it sees and connects to these USB devices. Once you start up your windows VM, the devices are already in use by the MAC.

To make the Windows VM see them, either turn off the USB device, and then turn it back on....or, disconnect the USB cable and then plug it back in.

XP should give you the "found new hardware message" unless it already has the drivers.

    Guess, maybe.
    Isolating variables, yes.

Another variable is whether you have autoconnect USB turned on or off.

    USB device in use

    Hi,

I have same issue, whatever USB device I connect (plantronics, disk, etc) I get
    a message like:

USB device you are trying to connect to the virtual machine is being used by another process. Wait 5-10 seconds, then try to connect the device again. If this does not help, find the application that blocked up the device and disconnect it manually.

I don't (as much as I know) any program using the device.
I tried unplug-plug again, without luck.
Also I de-installed Parallel tools and installed back just in case.
I'm running Windows XP SP 2.

    Any idea ?

    THanks

Have you tried turning auto-connect off and manually selecting their connection?

yes its simple and i can access the files from parallels , but i'm unable to write on my external HD (ntfs) in parallels when its shared.

i am also having the exact same problems as poster.

@eru: yes it didnt work with autoconnect on or off.
